BIVOUAC —
ESTABLISHING A FIELD CAMP

June 14, 2026 09:00 – 15:00 KRS-02 Single Topic 6 hours Field excursion · Outdoors Eastern Norway NOK 400

This session goes deep on one of the most essential survival topics: establishing a safe and functional field camp. We cover everything from site selection and terrain reading, through knots and construction techniques, to building an emergency bivouac — finishing with an improvised tripod for boiling water and drying gear.

Each participant builds their own bivouac from natural materials. You don't just learn the theory — you carry it out yourself, under guidance.

The session is structured as a local field excursion. Lunch is prepared on a BioLite stove (sausages in bread).

Day Programme
09:00
Meet-up and briefing
Meeting at the agreed location. Introduction and overview of the day's plan as we make our way out to the area. We discuss what makes a good — and a poor — bivouac site along the way.
09:30
Terrain reading and site selection
What determines a good bivouac site? Wind direction, slope, drainage, moisture and vegetation — nature itself gives us signals about where to camp and where not to.
10:15
Knots for shelter construction
Hands-on practice with the most useful knots for building shelter — clove hitch, timber hitch, square lashing and slip knot. We practise until they're solid, with and without gloves.
11:00
Insulation and windproofing
What separates a bivouac that keeps you warm from one that doesn't? Insulation principles, windproofing with natural materials and protecting against ground moisture. Theory and demonstration.
11:30
Lunch on the BioLite 🍳
A break with warm food — sausages in bread on the BioLite stove. Efficient and no fire risk. Feel free to bring extra food as needed.
12:15
Improvised tripod
We construct a simple tripod from natural materials — for hanging a pot over heat or suspending wet gear to dry. A small but practical detail in setting up a functional field camp.
12:30
Building the emergency bivouac
Each participant builds their own emergency bivouac from what the terrain provides — branches, moss, natural materials and what we've brought. We apply the knots and principles from earlier. The instructor guides throughout.
14:30
Review and shared reflections
We walk through each other's bivouacs, assess the solutions and share experiences. What worked? What would you do differently? Summary and tips for continued self-training.
15:00
End of session
Wrap-up and departure.
